Can My Puncture Be Repaired?

Not every puncture means you need a new tyre. In many cases, a puncture can be properly repaired — saving you money and getting you back on the road quickly. However, there are strict rules about when a repair is safe, and we always follow them honestly.

A tyre can generally be repaired if the puncture is caused by a nail, screw or similar object in the central three-quarters of the tread, and the hole is no larger than 6mm in diameter. The repair involves removing the object, cleaning the puncture channel, and fitting a proper mushroom-head plug from the inside of the tyre — the only type of repair recognised as safe under British Standard BS AU 159.

When Is a Tyre Beyond Repair?

There are situations where a puncture cannot be safely repaired, and we will always tell you the truth rather than carrying out a repair that could put you at risk. A tyre cannot be repaired if the damage is in the sidewall or shoulder area, if the tyre has been driven on while flat (causing internal structural damage), if the puncture hole is larger than 6mm, or if there is any cracking, bulging or secondary damage to the tyre structure.

In any of these cases, the only safe solution is a replacement. We carry a good stock of tyres in our van, covering a wide range of sizes and brands, so in most cases we can fit a replacement tyre on the same visit.

What About Slow Punctures?

A slow puncture — where a tyre gradually loses pressure over hours or days rather than going flat immediately — is usually caused by a small object lodged in the tread, a faulty valve, or a slight bead leak where the tyre meets the wheel rim. We investigate all three possibilities before recommending a repair or replacement. Do not ignore a slow puncture; a tyre losing pressure is a tyre losing grip, and it can fail unexpectedly.
