Wheel balancing is the process of equalising the weight distribution of a tyre and wheel assembly so that it rotates smoothly at speed. Even a small imbalance — as little as a few grams — can cause noticeable vibration through the steering wheel or seat, uneven tyre wear, and extra stress on your wheel bearings, suspension and tyres over time.
Balancing is done using a specialist machine that spins the wheel and identifies exactly where weight needs to be added. Small adhesive or clip-on weights are then attached to the rim at the correct position to bring the assembly into balance. The whole process takes just a few minutes per wheel.
An unbalanced wheel does more damage than most drivers realise. The most obvious symptom is vibration — typically felt in the steering wheel at speeds above 50mph — but the less visible effects can be just as costly. Unbalanced wheels cause tyres to wear unevenly and prematurely, which means you end up replacing tyres sooner than you should. They also put extra strain on your wheel bearings and suspension components, leading to expensive repairs down the line.
