With the UK's increasingly unpredictable winters, more drivers across Birmingham and the West Midlands are asking whether they should invest in winter tyres or all-season tyres. Here is an honest breakdown.
Standard summer tyres are optimised for performance in temperatures above 7°C. Below that threshold, the rubber compound begins to harden, reducing grip on wet, cold and icy surfaces. This is why winter tyres exist — they use a softer compound and more complex tread pattern specifically designed to maintain grip in cold, wet and snowy conditions.
Winter tyres offer genuinely superior performance in cold weather. In independent tests, a car on winter tyres stops significantly shorter on cold wet roads, and substantially shorter on snow and ice, compared to the same car on summer tyres. In a harsh winter with regular snow and ice, the safety benefit is clear.
