Run-flat tyres are increasingly common on new cars — particularly BMW, Mini and some Mercedes models — and they generate a lot of questions from drivers across Birmingham and the West Midlands. Here is a clear guide to what you need to know.
A run-flat tyre has reinforced sidewalls that allow the tyre to continue supporting the vehicle even when completely deflated. Instead of immediately going flat and becoming undriveable, a run-flat tyre allows you to continue driving at reduced speed — typically up to 50mph — for up to 50 miles after a puncture. This gives you enough range to reach a safe location or a tyre fitting service without needing a spare wheel.
Run-flat tyres are identified by markings on the tyre sidewall — typically "RFT", "ROF" (Run On Flat), "EMT" (Extended Mobility Tyre), "ZP" (Zero Pressure) or "SSR" (Self-Supporting Runflat) depending on the manufacturer.
Can you repair a run-flat tyre after a puncture? In most cases, no. Even if the visible puncture damage appears minor, driving on a fully deflated run-flat causes internal structural damage to the reinforced sidewall that is not visible from the outside. For safety reasons, most tyre manufacturers and the British tyre industry's own guidelines advise that run-flat tyres should be replaced rather than repaired after any loss of pressure.
Can you replace a run-flat with a normal tyre? Technically yes, but it is not advisable on vehicles fitted with run-flat tyres as original equipment. These vehicles are typically not fitted with a spare wheel, so replacing a run-flat with a standard tyre means you would be stranded if the replacement tyre was also punctured. If you do replace a run-flat with a standard tyre, you should replace all four for consistency — and be aware that some tyre pressure monitoring systems may show a warning.
