Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly common on West Midlands roads, and they have specific tyre requirements that differ from conventional petrol and diesel cars. Here is what you need to know.
Electric vehicles are significantly heavier than equivalent petrol cars, primarily because of the battery pack. A standard family EV can be 20 to 30 per cent heavier than its petrol equivalent. This extra weight puts greater stress on tyres, meaning standard car tyres wear faster on an EV than on a petrol car.
Electric vehicles also have instant torque delivery. When you press the accelerator, the motor delivers its maximum torque immediately — unlike a petrol engine which builds power through the rev range. This instant torque can cause tyre scrub if the traction control does not intervene quickly enough, and contributes to faster tyre wear on the driven wheels.
Many EV manufacturers specify tyres with an "EV" designation — these tyres have load ratings suited to the extra weight, reinforced construction to handle the torque loads, and low rolling resistance compounds that help preserve battery range. Examples include Michelin E Primacy, Continental EcoContact 6, and Goodyear ElectricDrive tyres. Some EVs require these specific tyres — others can use standard tyres with appropriate load and speed ratings.
Tyre noise is also more noticeable in electric vehicles because there is no engine noise to mask it. Many EV-specific tyres incorporate foam noise-dampening layers inside the tyre to address this.
As a result of the above factors, EV tyres typically wear faster than on equivalent petrol vehicles — some EV drivers report needing replacements significantly sooner than the manufacturer's estimates. Rotating tyres every 10,000 miles (front to rear and vice versa) helps equalise wear.
