One of the most common questions we get from drivers across Birmingham and the West Midlands is whether they should buy budget tyres or premium tyres. The honest answer is: it depends on how you drive.
Premium tyres — from brands like Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone, Pirelli and Goodyear — are developed with significant investment in research and testing. They consistently achieve top ratings in independent wet-weather braking tests, and this is where the difference really shows. In wet conditions at 60mph, a premium tyre can stop a car several metres shorter than a budget tyre. On wet roads — which is most of the time in the West Midlands — this can be the difference between avoiding a collision and not.
Premium tyres also tend to last longer. Better tread compounds wear more slowly, so although the initial cost is higher, the cost per mile of use is often competitive with budget options. They also tend to be quieter and offer better fuel economy due to lower rolling resistance.
Budget tyres — from brands like Linglong, Sailun, Rapid, Accelera and Rotalla — are manufactured to meet EU tyre labelling standards and UK legal requirements. They are tested and road-legal. What they sacrifice compared to premium brands is wet-weather stopping distance, high-speed stability, and longevity.
That said, budget tyres make genuine sense in certain situations. If you do low annual mileage — mostly short city trips around Birmingham — the difference in performance over your typical driving may be small. If you are replacing a tyre urgently and need to keep costs down, a quality budget brand is far better than driving on a damaged tyre. If your car is old and you are not planning to keep it long, investing in premium tyres may not make financial sense.
Our recommendation: if you drive more than 8,000 miles a year, do regular motorway driving, or drive in challenging weather conditions, go mid-range or premium. The safety benefit is real and the cost difference over the life of the tyre is smaller than most people expect. If you are a low-mileage city driver, a quality budget brand from a reputable manufacturer is a perfectly reasonable choice.
