Why Wheel Balancing Matters — and When to Get It Done

Published 2026-04-08  ·  TT Mobile Tyre Fitting 24/7

Wheel balancing is one of those maintenance items that many drivers ignore until something goes wrong. Here is why it matters and what to look out for.

Every tyre and wheel assembly has slight variations in weight distribution — even a brand-new tyre straight from the factory. When a wheel spins at speed, these variations create a repeating oscillation that manifests as vibration through the steering wheel, seat or floor. At high speeds, even a few grams of imbalance can cause noticeable vibration.

The symptoms of unbalanced wheels are fairly distinctive. Vibration through the steering wheel — particularly at motorway speeds between 50 and 70mph — is the most common sign. The vibration is typically speed-dependent, appearing and intensifying within a specific speed range. You may also notice your car appears to "waddle" slightly at speed, or that one or more tyres are wearing in an irregular cupping or scalloping pattern.

Balancing is carried out by spinning the wheel on a specialist machine that identifies exactly where the imbalance is and how much weight is needed to correct it. Small adhesive or clip-on weights are then attached to the rim at the precise location identified by the machine. The process takes a few minutes per wheel and the result should be immediate — the vibration stops.

Wheels go out of balance more commonly than most drivers realise. Hitting a pothole, a sharp kerb, or a significant bump in the road can knock a balancing weight off or shift the mass distribution within the tyre. The condition of Birmingham's and the West Midlands' roads means this is a regular occurrence for local drivers.
