Tyre Noise — What Causes It and How to Fix It

Published 2026-04-12  ·  TT Mobile Tyre Fitting 24/7

Unusual noise coming from your tyres is one of the most common concerns raised by drivers across Birmingham and the West Midlands. Here are the main causes and what each type of noise typically means.

A regular thumping or bumping noise that varies with speed is often caused by a flat spot on the tyre. This can develop if a car has been stationary for a long period — the tyre develops a flat area where it sat on the ground. Flat spots from prolonged parking usually correct themselves after a few miles of driving as the tyre warms up and regains its shape. If the flat spot is severe or does not resolve, the tyre may need replacing.

A roaring or humming noise that increases with speed — similar to the sound of driving on a rough road surface even when the road is smooth — is typically caused by uneven tyre wear. Cupping (also called scalloping) creates a pattern of high and low spots around the tyre's circumference that generates noise. Cupping is usually caused by worn shock absorbers or suspension components, or by wheels that need balancing.

A rhythmic thumping or vibration at a specific speed can indicate a wheel balancing issue. When a wheel is out of balance, it creates a repeating pattern of vibration that often appears within a narrow speed range. Having the wheels balanced usually resolves this immediately.

A roaring noise from one side of the car that changes when you gently steer left or right is often a wheel bearing beginning to fail rather than a tyre issue. If the noise gets louder when you steer in one direction and quieter in the other, get the wheel bearings inspected promptly — a failed wheel bearing is dangerous.

Tyre tread pattern also affects noise. Aggressive all-terrain tread patterns are inherently noisier than smooth touring tyre patterns. If you have recently changed tyres and noticed more noise, this may simply be a characteristic of the new tyre design.
