Not every puncture means you need to buy a new tyre. In many cases, a puncture can be properly and safely repaired — saving you the cost of a replacement. But the rules about when a repair is safe are strict, and we always follow them.
A tyre puncture can be repaired if all of the following conditions are met. The puncture must be in the central three-quarters of the tread — the area across the middle portion of the tyre, away from the shoulder and sidewall. The puncture hole must be no larger than 6mm in diameter. The tyre must not have been driven on while flat, as this causes internal structural damage that cannot be seen from the outside but makes the tyre unsafe. There must be no secondary damage — cuts, bulges, or cracks anywhere on the tyre.
The correct repair method is a mushroom-head plug patch fitted from the inside of the tyre, following British Standard BS AU 159. This is the only repair method recognised as safe by the tyre industry. Roadside string plugs or sealant sprays are temporary emergency measures only — they are not permanent repairs and a tyre repaired this way should be inspected and properly repaired as soon as possible.
A tyre cannot be repaired if the puncture is in the sidewall or shoulder area. The sidewall flexes constantly during driving and a repair in this area will not hold under the stress. A tyre cannot be repaired if it has been driven flat — the internal structure may be compromised in ways that are not visible. A tyre cannot be repaired if the puncture hole is larger than 6mm, or if there is any bulging, cracking or secondary damage.
When we attend a puncture callout across Birmingham and the West Midlands, we always remove the tyre from the rim and inspect it fully from the inside before deciding whether a repair is safe. We will never carry out a repair that we do not believe is safe, and we will never tell you a tyre needs replacing when it can genuinely be repaired — we have no interest in selling you something you do not need.
