Your tyres are the only part of your car in contact with the road. Spending ten minutes checking them regularly is one of the most important safety habits you can develop. Here are the five checks every driver should do at least once a month.
Check 1: Tyre pressure. Use a pressure gauge when the tyres are cold — before you have driven more than a mile or two. Compare the reading against the recommended pressure in your owner's manual or the sticker inside the driver's door frame. Both under-inflation and over-inflation reduce grip, increase wear, and affect fuel economy.
Check 2: Tread depth. Insert a 20p coin into the main tread grooves. If you can see the outer band of the coin, the tread is at or below 1.6mm and the tyre is illegal. More importantly, check whether the tread is wearing evenly across the full width — uneven wear indicates a problem with pressure, alignment or suspension.
Check 3: Sidewall condition. Run your eye and hand across both sidewalls of each tyre. Look for any bulges, bubbles, cuts, cracks or splits. A bulge in the sidewall indicates internal damage — the tyre must be replaced immediately and the car should not be driven until it is. Sidewall cracks on older tyres indicate rubber ageing.
Check 4: General condition. Look for any embedded objects — nails, screws, stones — in the tread. If there is a nail in the tread and the tyre is still holding pressure, do not remove it — the nail is plugging the hole. Call TT Mobile Tyre Fitting 24/7 and we will come to you.
Check 5: Spare tyre or puncture kit. If your car has a spare tyre, check its pressure and condition. Many drivers discover their spare is flat or perished when they actually need it. If your car has a puncture repair kit rather than a spare, check the sealant canister has not expired.
