How Often Should You Replace Your Tyres? A Practical Guide

There is no fixed mileage at which tyres must be replaced — it depends on how you drive, where you drive, and how well the tyres are maintained. But there are clear rules that tell you when a tyre must be replaced.

The legal minimum is a tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Most driving safety organisations recommend replacing at 3mm because wet-weather braking performance degrades significantly below this point. If you only replace at the legal minimum, you are driving on tyres that are legal but perform considerably worse in wet conditions than new tyres.

In terms of mileage, most car tyres last between 20,000 and 40,000 miles under normal driving conditions. Budget tyres tend towards the lower end of this range; premium tyres towards the upper end. Your driving style has a significant effect — aggressive acceleration, hard braking and fast cornering consume tread far faster than smooth, progressive driving.

Age is also a factor, even if the tread depth is still good. Rubber compounds degrade over time through UV exposure, heat cycling and oxidation — this is called rubber ageing or "crazing". The British Tyre Manufacturers' Association recommends that tyres should be inspected annually once they are five years old, and that regardless of appearance, tyres over ten years old should be replaced. You can find the age of your tyre from the DOT code on the sidewall — the last four digits indicate the week and year of manufacture.

Signs that your tyres need replacing immediately regardless of tread depth: any visible sidewall bulge or bubble (indicates internal structural damage — do not drive on this), cracking or crazing of the sidewall rubber, any tyre that has been driven on while flat, or any tyre with a cut or damage that penetrates to the cords.
