What To Do When You Get a Puncture — A Step-by-Step Guide

Getting a puncture is one of those moments where most drivers freeze. Here is exactly what to do if it happens to you in Birmingham or anywhere across the West Midlands.

The first sign of a puncture is usually a change in how the car handles — a pulling to one side, a vibration through the steering, or a thumping noise from one corner. If you notice any of these, do not ignore them. Slow down gradually and get off the road safely.

Do not brake hard or swerve. Keep both hands on the wheel, ease off the accelerator, and allow the car to slow naturally. Steer towards the kerb or a safe stopping area, activate your hazard lights, and come to a complete stop.

Once stopped, assess your surroundings before getting out. If you are on a motorway or fast dual carriageway, stay inside the vehicle with your seatbelt on and call for help — do not stand next to the car. On a normal road, once you are safely parked, you can assess the damage.

Look at the tyre. Is there an object — a nail, screw or piece of debris — still lodged in the tread? If so, do not remove it. The object is actually plugging the hole and removing it will cause the tyre to deflate faster. A tyre can often be repaired with the object still in place.

Check whether the tyre has gone completely flat or is still holding some air. If it is a slow puncture — losing air gradually rather than going flat instantly — you may be able to drive very carefully to a safe stopping point, but do not drive on a completely flat tyre. This causes serious damage to the wheel rim and tyre structure.

Call TT Mobile Tyre Fitting 24/7 on 07762 455291. We cover all of Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley, Coventry and the surrounding West Midlands. We will come to wherever you are — on a road, in a car park or at your home — assess the tyre, and either repair it or replace it on the spot. Most jobs are completed within 45 minutes of arrival.

If you are on a motorway, call us and then call 999 or the Highways England traffic officer service (0300 123 5000) to let them know you are stationary. Get behind a barrier rather than standing next to your car.

The three things to remember: slow down gradually, stay safe, and call 07762 455291. We are available around the clock, every day of the year.
